Corruption in football
A little over two years ago, I led my team at Tiger Eye on an investigation into alleged cases of corruption affecting the integrity of football administration and officiating in Ghana and other parts of Africa. Our investigation focused on local leagues, referees, club owners, coaches and the higher reaches of football administration in Ghana, as well as its connection to continental and global football.
These findings were produced into a documentary film, titled “Number 12: When Greed and Corruption Become the Norm.” The film takes a sweeping look at cases of match-fixing and its effect on hardworking footballers; compromised match officials and how that contributes to preventable tragedies (with echoes of the May 9, 2001 stadium disaster); corruption within top national sports management and its effect on the country’s reputation on the global stage.
It answers nagging questions of why the Black Stars missed out on the African Nations and the World Cup; and why our local league is in tatters. The men and women responsible were to be named and shamed in this exposé.
Since the production and release of this documentary in June 2018, we have made a lot of positive impact in the development and restructuring of football on the continent. We are expecting more impact in the coming years.
